We all want to save the world, but you don’t have to be a superhero to do so. It’s pretty easy actually. It just takes a little effort and a lot of consistency. Here are three things you can do today (like right now!) to help save the planet and fight the evils of plastic over-consumption.
1. Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Worldwide, we buy about one million plastic bottles per minute! In America alone, about 50 billion water bottles are purchased per year, averaging about 13 bottles per month for every person in the U.S. That means by using a reusable water bottle, you could save an average of 156 plastic bottles annually. Of those 50 billion plastic bottles only about 23% are recycled within the U.S. Some make it to the landfill where they can leach chemicals into the ground but much of it ends up in our oceans, polluting one of our most valuable natural resources and killing millions of marine life a year.
Hopefully, you get the point, but stopping this evil is simple with a one-two superhero punch. First, stop using single-use water bottles!
Pretty easy, huh?
2. Use a Reusable Coffee Mug or Thermos
500 billion disposable cups are consumed every year. In the U.S. we throw away 25 billion styrofoam coffee cups every year. Styrofoam is difficult to recycle and is one of the worst plastics for the environment. Most of the Styrofoam disposed of today will still be present in landfills 500 years from now!
When single-use plastics are sent to landfills (which most are), they aren’t harmless. Landfill liners can leak harmful pollutants into the watershed and plastics on the tops of landfills can be carried away by the wind and deposited into our lakes, rivers, and streams.
If you’re like us, you drink a lot of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. If so, the best thing you can do for the earth is to invest in a reusable coffee mug for drinks on the go. Find the one that works best for you. We particularly like the Miir Camp Cup as it makes us feel we’re sitting next to the campfire on a cold fall evening (even when we are really just in the coffee shop staring out the window). As a perk, many coffee shops will give you a discount on your cup of joe for using a reusable cup and it sure feels good sipping a hot beverage knowing that you’re doing your part to save the world.
3. Reduce, Reuse (we especially like this one, ;) Repair, Recycle.
Here’s the dirty truth of why climate change is so rampant. We as humans (and especially in developed nations like the U.S.) are over-producing products as businesses and over-consuming as customers. It’s hard, we know! There are a lot of cool products out there, but the addiction to more and more great stuff is choking out the planet that we cherish and need for our universal survival.
We’re not asking you to burn all of your possessions (that would actually pollute the world more) and go live in the wilds of the woods and forage for food. All you have to do is ask some basic questions of yourself. Such as, Do I really need this item in my life? What is the product made of and will it easily breakdown back into the environment? How long will I use it and how will it be disposed of after it’s used?
Asking simple but profound questions of ourselves will make a huge difference in our fight against overconsumption and climate change. These are the questions we ask ourselves every day here at Reventu.
Simply, we have to reduce the amount we are consuming and reuse what we already have. Reventu was founded on the principle of reusing what we have and was created so more people can have access to excellent and well-made apparel and gear without making more of it.
Repair what we can to continue the use of it and finally recycle that which can no longer be used. Throwing less and less into the garbage is a trend for saving the world and the health of the planet.
